DisplayPort is a digital video display interface developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It is used to connect a video source to a display device like a computer monitor. It was developed with the aim of replacing VGA, DVI and FPD-Link, although you will still be able to use DisplayPort enabled video sources without having to replace your display devices thanks to backward compatibility to VGA and DVI by means of adapter dongles. Since it was launched in 2006, DisplayPort has become very popular and widely adopted by the computer industry. It is currently featured on most graphic or display cards, laptops and tablets.
DisplayPort cables can also be used for transmitting audio and other types of data. These cables are capable of transmitting multichannel digital audio and video simultaneously. They can also carry bi-directional USB signals.
The current version of DisplayPort cables, 1.2, provides enough bandwidth to handle video resolutions of up to 3840x2160 pixels at a refresh rate of 60Hz. DisplayPort cables can support the most common 3D video formats. By using an adapter a DisplayPort cable can connect a DisplayPort source to a VGA (older format) display device. Passive copper DisplayPort cables are capable of handling extremely high data rates over a length of up to 2m.
The DisplayPort interface is not compatible with DVI or HDMI (although it has very similar functionality to HDMI). However, we have adapters available to connect DisplayPort sources to single-link DVI and HDMI displays.
